'Rewired': Meet the Real 'Bionic Woman'

Claudia Mitchell may look like your fair 20-something college student. She is anything but.

The "targeted reinnervation" surgery was developed by Dr. Todd Kuiken of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. It was a radical idea: a robotic arm controlled not by a patient's stump or shoulder, but by a patient's thoughts.

Mitchell, a U.S. Marine, was ready to try anything to have a second operation arm. She volunteered for the surgery.

During the six-hour procedure in 2006, doctors took the severed and dormant nerves in Mitchell's shoulder, nerves that ar used to control the movement of her branch, and assign them under the muscle in her chest.

They treasured the nerves to reawaken and work her bureau muscle. The doctors eventually used the electrical cheek signals from that chest muscle to power a new bionic arm.

'We Have Rewired Her'

Now, when Mitchell wants to move her arm, she thinks "move." The signal travels from her wit to the muscle in her chest. According to Kuiken, Mitchell's chest muscle then contracts and "lets tiny bits of electricity out."

There ar tiny antennas built into the robotic arm, which pick up these electrical signals. The signals then go to an internal computer that decodes them and tells the artificial arm what to do. It's about instantaneous.

"We possess rewired her," Kuiken said.

For Mitchell, living with her new arm has meant constant discovery.

"I have what I call my 'eureka moments,'" Mitchell said. "My stupefied 'I can't believe I just did that' moments."

Now she can do the simple things that almost people take for given, like folding a shirt, slicing vegetables or fifty-fifty opening a wine bottle.

"There are a lot of daily tasks that the great unwashed don't fifty-fifty think around being able to do that I can [do] now," she said.

Paul McCartney's love song for Heather

Washington (ANI): Sir Paul McCartney has spoken about his break up with Heather Mills, in the form of a song. The former Beatle, whose wedlock to the former model ended in a bitter and lengthy High Court divorce struggle, has consistently refused to talk around his former spouse in public. However, Macca has now explicit his curse about the breakdown of his second marriage in a young ballad, coroneted 'My Soul', taken from his forthcoming album 'London Undersound'.

The lyrics reference the former couple's struggle with the paparazzi and 'secrets' that were kept from him. He sings; "I want to experience all your secrets. How could this steal all these feelings? How could they lie to the world? A picture away from your smile. One heart replaced. Feelings displaced. Invade our space."

Rihanna: I'm Not in Love!

Is Rihanna just stringing Chris Brown along?

The lovebirds have only recently gone public -- PDA and all -- with their year-long relationship, but it's nothing serious -- at least for Rihanna.

"No, I'm not in love," the Grammy winner tells Extra when grilled about her deep affections.

Trying to deflect the attention, the 20-year-old asserts that she loves life because "life is beautiful."

One thing Rihanna will talk about though is her new disc -- Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded. The album was hit shelves on Tuesday and features all of her biggest hits from the original release and a whole lot more.

"We called it reloaded because we reloaded with a bunch of cool, new songs, including 'Take a Bow' and 'Disturbia,' the song by Maroon 5, 'If I Never See Your Face Again,' and a bonus dvd with a bunch of performances, backstage footage," she says. "Cameras followed us around on tour, so they got a bunch of good stuff, fun stuff."

And get ready for an even bigger release from the Barbados native -- Rihanna has plans to launch her own fashion line.

"I love fashion so much," she says. "I'm a very creative person, so I can see that happening very soon."

Michael Eavis Says Glastonbury Could Go On For 8 More Years

Glastonbury Festival could run until 2015, as organiser Michael Eavis says he hopes to keep hosting the event for another seven years.

Eavis, told the BBC, "It's a schoolboy's dream come true, this is. When it works like this, we've got the best, fantastic show."

Michael did also explain that the rain-drenched event last year nearly put him off from hosting the festival: "Last year I thought I genuinely can't do this anymore. All the tents were left behind and the site was a mess."

This weekend's event, which starts today Friday June 27th, will see Kings Of Leon and The Verve joined by a controversial Jay-Z headline slot.

Unlike other years which have sold out instantly, poor ticket sales troubled the festival this year with 800 still remaining now.

Born and bred in a city scarcely known for its country music heritage, Detroit's Deadstring Brothers play alternative country-rock with no little amount of sway & revolve swagger and a deep bluesy undertow that often suggests Exile on Main St.-era Rolling Stones more than Uncle Tupelo or their followers. The Deadstring Brothers formed in late 2001, when singer and ballad maker Kurt Marschke, wHO had been playing shows as a solo acoustic act, began working up substantial with a smattering of likeminded friends. The band cadaverous no time earning a reputation for its ruffianly only soulful intelligent, and on September 9, 2003, the group released its self-titled debut through Detroit's Times Beach Records. On the disk, Marschke was coupled by Peter Ballard (Dobro, foot lever blade), Phil Durr (guitar), Eric Hoegemeyer (tambourine), Aric Karpinski (organ, pianissimo), William King (percussion, drums), Philip Skarich (bass, guitar, percussion), and Ross Westerbur (strings, chamberlin), with backdrop vocals by Skarich, Robert Burrows, Masha Marjieh, Mimi Marjieh, and Loura Rock. Plenty of touring followed, with the Deadstring Brothers sharing stages with Cat Power, the Sadies, the Drive-By Truckers, and My Morning Jacket. In 2005, the band sign with Chicago's chancellor alt-country label, Bloodshot Records. Bloodshot licenced their second long-player, Starvation Winter Report, to Evangeline Records for liberation in England, where it in reality appeared prior to its domestic discharge, on October 3, 2005, the American issue climax on February 21, 2006. The musicians performing on the album were Marschke, Hoegemeyer, Skarich, Westerbur, Masha Marjieh, Rayse Biggs (trumpet), Edward Gooch (trombone), and David Mosher (play). More touring followed, and the band's staff office continued to evolve, in finicky with the infusion of several British members. As of the liberation of the Deadstring Brothers' third album, Silver Mountain, on October 9, 2007, the group was a sextet consisting of Marschke, Masha Marjieh, drummer E. Travis Harrett, and U.K. recruits Spencer Cullum on guitar, treadle sword, and circuit brand, his older comrade Jeff Cullum on bass, and Pat Kenneally on keyboards.

Ryan Sheckler Heads Up 2008 AST Dew Tour, Seeks Fourth Skate Park Title

Ryan Sheckler might be a skateboarder, but he draws a crowd like a platinum-selling rock star.

As soon as the 18-year-old phenom arrived at the MTV Store in Times Square for an interview, his fans (almost entirely teen girls) made their presence known with intense "Oh my God!" shrieks and muffled rummaging for digital cameras. They filled the shop to the point where store management insisted on closing its doors. Outside the store, another 50 fans jostled for a glimpse through the window.

Just another public appearance for a guy who's been an award-winning pro skateboarder since age 13 and has his own MTV reality show, "Life of Ryan."

"The crying girls, the girls that pass out — I think that's pretty funny," he nervously joked.

Now Sheckler hopes that his swooning fans will come out to see him on the AST Dew Tour, which kicked off Thursday in Baltimore and will move on to Cleveland; Portland, Oregon; Salt Lake City; and Orlando, Florida. Ryan will compete in the Skate Park events, a category in which he's won first place for the last three years. But this time around, one of his best buddies may end up being his toughest competition.

"Greg Lutzka, he's a guy [with whom I] go back and forth, first and second, on all the tours," Sheckler said. "We'll see how this year goes. We're definitely really good friends. He lives right by me, so we skate all the time."

Also significant this year is that the AST Dew Tour has partnered with MTV and NBC, broadening the event's coverage and the sport's public visibility.

"It's definitely going to bring us more viewers. That's what we need. We need people to see how sick the action-sports world is."

When Ryan isn't landing his patented "Shecklair" (that's an indie kick-flip fly-out, for those not in the know), he's rocking out to Lil Wayne. "I've been listening to him for the last two years. That's all I can listen to."

And, like any other successful public figure these days, he's diversifying. He says he's in the early designing stages for his own clothing company and is taking another crack at acting — though nothing too far from what he does best.

"We just did 'Street Dreams' with Rob Dyrdek," Sheckler said of his fellow MTV star, from "Rob & Big." "My part in that is basically a famous skate kid, so it kind of fits."

AST Dew Tour Dates, according to AST.com:

» 6/19-22: Baltimore, MD @ Camden Yards Sports Complex

» 7/17-20: Cleveland, OH @ North Coast Harbor

» 8/21-24: Portland, OR @ Action Sports Playground

» 9/11-14: Salt Lake City, UT @ EnergySolutions Arena

» 10/16-19: Orlando, FL @ Amway Arena

The View play surprise acoustic gig

Weekend box office will be off the "WALL-E"

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - R2-D2, C-3PO, Robby the Robot, Robocop and the T-1000 all better step aside to make room: As of this weekend, there will be a new robo-star in town.

His name is WALL-E -- an acronym for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class -- and the little fella is a bit of a drone who has been left behind on Earth to clean up mankind's mess. The hero of Pixar's latest, similarly titled "WALL-E," he makes his debut Friday nationwide via Walt Disney Pictures.

While the weekend's other new wide release, Universal's R-rated action film "Wanted," should do a brisk business of its own, it's not looking to compete for the crowds expected to rush to embrace "WALL-E."

The early reviews have been ecstatic, hailing the Pixar team, this time headed by director Andrew Stanton ("Finding Nemo") for raising the animation bar again. So it's a safe bet that Pixar will enjoy its ninth successive No. 1 opening.

"WALL-E," which cost about $120 million to make, is not expected to open as big as 2004's "The Incredibles" ($70.5 million) or 2003's "Finding Nemo" ($70.3 million), but it should top the $47 million opening that "Ratatouille" achieved last summer as it pushes well into $50 million territory, possibly even flirting with the $60 million mark.

"Wanted," in which James McAvoy plays an everyman drawn into a world of high-powered assassins by a supercharged Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman, will follow with a weekend haul likely in the mid- to high-$30 million range. Filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov, until now known for the Russian "Night Watch" movies, directed the $75 million movie.
